There are people whom history remembers,
and others whom history does not even notice. But some people make history.
A person may make history by striving until reaching a certain position,
through which he leaves his mark in history.
He made history in every stage of his life!
Nazeer Gayed
The monk Antonios El-Souriany
Anba Shenouda, Bishop of Education
Pope Shenouda III
Different names for the same person,
yet each name carried its own mark in history.
Nazeer Gayed the brilliant young man and powerful preacher,
who was a writer, a literary figure, and a poet;
editor-in-chief of the Sunday Schools Magazine,
and an officer in the Egyptian army.
Nazeer Gayed, writer of the articles “The Release of the Spirit”,
and the poem “O Pilgrim,”
which expresses monastic life in its highest form.
Nazeer Gayed, disciple of the saint Habib Girgis, and translator of the writings of the Fathers.
Nazeer Gayed, who became a monk three days after entering the monastery, the delay only because they were waiting for the abbot to arrive.
So he became the monk Antonios El-Souriany, who became an icon of the Coptic monasticism:
Librarian of the Monastery of the Syrians (El Sourian), spiritual father for the brothers and new monks, the hermit who lived in a cave, whom many admired.
He was ordained through the wise and farsighted vision of Saint Pope Kyrillos VI.
Thus he became Anba Shenouda, Bishop of Education, bishop of the Theological Seminary and of the religious institutes and Christian education.
He traveled throughout Egypt, teaching in every diocese.
Anba Shenouda, whose weekly meeting gathered thousands of Copts.
Anba Shenouda, about whom people said after the repose of Pope Kyrillos:
“Who could be patriarch except Anba Shenouda?”
And so he became
Pope Shenouda III.
More than forty years for this great pope,
“Teacher of Generations” and a guiding light of the twentieth century.
A patriarch who remained a monk in his heart until his last day,
a son of St. Anthony the Great,
and successor of St. Athanasius and St. Cyril,
a man who faced many difficult moments,
whom God always supported,
who remained faithful in serving and teaching his people until the very last moments of his life.
During his papacy, Pope Shenouda III established many churches outside Egypt to serve Coptic communities around the world.
Pope Shenouda III
a lesson and an example in everything:
In his love for God and his full devotion to Him,
in spiritual struggle,
in faith, hope, and love,
in the purity of teaching and the preservation of the faith,
in faithfulness to the apostolic tradition,
in love for the Church and loyalty to her,
in culture and knowledge,
in love for Egypt,
in everything!
May God repose the soul of our father of thrice-blessed memory Pope Shenouda III
